We're Just Two Wild And Crazy Guys

Browsing the isles at the local Blockbuster, I see that Alicia Silverstone was in a movie called Silence Becomes You and can't help but laugh. I don't know and I don't care what it's about, but come on! Can you imagine the commercial for it?

"In a world . . . of flaky actresses who lower the bar for performance arts . . . sometimes you just want to tell her . . . shut up. Alicia Silverstone. Silence Becomes You."

Later I tell this to my brother, and we share a laugh, and then I act like a jerk, all "Might as well have called it "Shut Up, Bitch: The Movie," and we share more laughter . . .

And then, in the midst of our hilarity, he mentions that it would make a great band name.

"Shut Up Bitch: The Movie will be playing this weekend only at the Plaza."

Yes. Perfection.

They Weren't Wrong, Just Anachronistic

Every so often, a rumor gets circulated online and in real life that a certain fantasy author who hasn't finished writing his multi-volume series of epic fantasy has, however, developed a terminal illness, with the implication that he'll die before he finishes.

In a letter to the Locus Magazine of science fiction and fantasy, with further elaboration in his own blog James Oliver Rigney, Jr. aka Johannah Bobberybrook Mckilney O'Dimpfingerus IV, who writes fantasy under the name Robert Jordan, has developed a rare and usually terminal blood disease. He's optimistic, because there are treatments, and guarantees he'll at least finish the series he's been writing since the mid-80s, but also plans thirty more years of book-writing.

I admire his dedication and tenacity. I used to admire his writing, and still do on several of the early books, but my own commitment to the series is mostly along the lines of the waiting for it to finish, already variety.

Regardless, I hope he recovers.
